Souris Valley United Way History

Locally, Souris Valley United Way was formed in 1930 as the Minot Community Chest.

Years later the name was changed to United Fund of Minot. In 1971 the name changed to United Fund of Greater Minot. In 1985 the name changed to what it is today - Souris Valley United Way.

Over the years Souris Valley United Way has grown from supporting 5 agencies to 25 agencies providing over 29 programs to our local community. In the last 25 years, the people of the Minot area have invested over $8.1 million dollars toward a better way of life and healthier community.

Souris Valley United Way is governed by a 25 member Board of Directors. The local Community Building Committee assesses each grant request and recommends grant awards to the Board of Directors. This takes approximately 300 man hours.

The annual campaign usually begins in early September and runs through mid December of each year.

United Way of America History

1887 - Denver, Colorado
Businessmen and clergy recognized their community could benefit from a joint effort to provide human service programs to everyone. Their resources and volunteer efforts formed a "united campaign." They created an organization to serve as an agent to collect funds for local charities, as well as to coordinate relief services, counsel and refer clients to cooperating agencies, and make emergency assistance grants in cases which could not be referred.

1913 - First Modern Community Chest
In Cleveland, a program was developed for allocating campaign funds.

2009 - Over 120 Years Later
United Way is still focused on mobilizing the caring power of communities and making a difference in people's lives. Today, there are over 1,300 local United Way organizations nationwide.
