  • I KNOW SOMEONE WHO DIDN'T GET HELP.
No one is turned down deliberately. Sometimes there is a waiting list for a service that's in great demand. If someone needs helps, phone 2-1-1 or 839-2994 so they can be referred to the appropriate agencies.

  • MY SPOUSE GIVES FOR BOTH OF US.
Each person has his or her own community responsibility. Only by each person giving can United Way meet the many needs of our area.

  • DOES UNITED WAY CONDONE PRESSURE IN GIVING?
No, the Board of Directors is on record opposing it. Pressure violates the spirit of voluntary giving.

  • CAN I DESIGNATE MY CONTRIBUTION TO THE AGENCY OF MY CHOICE?
Yes, you can designate your contribution to any of the United Way granted agencies that are listed in the brochure. Just list them on the pledge card.

  • I DON'T GIVE TO UNITED WAY BECAUSE I DON'T WANT MY MONEY GOING TO (agency).
By withholding support because of one agency, a person is penalizing other agencies that are providing important services. Anyone can designate to any of the United Way agencies by listing them on their pledge card.

  • I WORK FOR A LIVING. I PAY MY OWN WAY. I'M NOT GOING TO USE THESE SERVICES, SO WHY SHOULD I SUPPORT THEM?
It's possible that you may never use United Way services, but statistics show that you or a member of your family will probably use United Way services at some point in their lives. In fact, one of four people in the area are directly served by United Way programs today.

  • WHY GIVE TO UNITED WAY WHEN GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS SUPPORT LOCAL AGENCIES?
While government dollars, in combination with private dollars, are used to fund services in our community, government cutbacks have seriously affected the ability of agencies to maintain their previous levels of service.

  • I CAN'T AFFORD TO GIVE TO UNITED WAY.
We're all fighting the cost-of-living battle. If times are tough for us, what must it be like for people who have additional problems that require help from an agency? With costs going up and government funding going down, agencies are trying to provide services to more people with fewer dollars.

  • WHY ISN'T (agency) FUNDED BY UNITED WAY?
Some organizations do not wish to receive United Way funding. Those who do are screened by local volunteers who ask for a variety of information to determine eligibility. Among other requirements, agencies must be nonprofit, have a volunteer board of directors, and have a policy of non-discrimination, as well as effectively address a specific problem in the community. Local volunteers determine what programs at the agency should be funded and how much money they should receive.

  • ANOTHER QUESTION NOT LISTED HERE?
Ask your United Way volunteer or have them get in touch with United Way at 839-2994.
