6th Annual Community Baby Shower

Souris Valley United Way wrapped ups their 6th Annual Community Baby Shower on June 21st. Over 30+ businesses were participating as donation drop locations from June 1-21 which are listed on the SVUW's website and Facebook page. The donation drive ended on June 21st with a collection event at the Dakota Square Mall from 11-7pm.

This year the Souris Valley United Way hosted their first Diaper Derby and Toddler Trot for parents to bring their children to participate in. “We had a great turn out for the first year, and the families had a great time watching their children race for the prize,” said Danielle Rued, Campaign Coordinator. All entry fees went to help buy additional items for the shower.

Rued was pleased with the generosity of the community, “We exceeded our goal by over 9,000 diapers and were able to distribute 29,275 diapers, along with numerous baby care items and adult personal care items to the local pantries and programs in need.”

“There is such a need for diapers, baby wipes, and other personal care items,” said Rich Berg, Director of the Souris Valley United Way. “It was wonderful to see the generous outpouring of support for the vulnerable young children in our community.” For those still looking to help, monetary donations can be sent to the office or completed on the Souris Valley United Way website.

A newborn needs 10-12 diapers a day – something you will experience (or re-experience!) with the arrival of your new baby. Diaper need impacts the physical, mental & economic well- being of children & parents.

Why Is There a Need for Diapers?
•    Infants need up to a dozen diapers per day; toddlers need up to 8 diapers per day
•    Most Child care centers require parents to provide a day’s supply of disposable diapers.
•    An adequate supply of diapers could cost $70-80 per month, per child
•    Diapers are not covered by WIC or other forms of public assistance
