ND Reading Corps to launch in Minot Public Schools
Minot, N.D. — The Minot Area Community Foundation in conjunction with the Souris Valley United Way announce the launch of North Dakota Reading Corps in one area Minot Public School. Sunnyside Elementary will participate in a pilot program to launch in the upcoming school year and will be holding a Media Event on Wednesday, August 19th at 11am in front of the school.
ND Reading corps has been implemented in schools in and around the Fargo and Bismarck areas with great success. The basic premise of the program is to work with students that are falling behind in reading but are not yet severe enough to require Title I services. To date, Reading Corps has boasted a 97% success rate with all children who have received services and has saved the State of North Dakota and school districts a vast amount of dollars that have been directed to serve children with special needs.
“We are so proud to be a part of this pilot program.” Ken Kitzman, President of the Minot Area Community Foundation – “Reading Corps will serve not only the students, but the teachers in our schools and the families at home.”
The Minot Area Community Foundation and the Souris Valley United Way have each dedicated $25,600 to fund the program for the first two school years through the Mid-Dakota Education Cooperative. Funds for the 2015-2016 school year will be directed to the program at Sunnyside. In the 2016-2017 school year, the program will utilize the funds to springboard into the additional Minot area elementary schools.
“Reading proficiently by the 3rd grade is one of the single greatest predictors of school success.” Patricia Smith, Executive Director Souris Valley United Way – “We are so glad to make a positive impact for these children by giving them the extra attention they need to learn and enjoy reading.”
